Color: Ruby with slight garnet hues, suggesting the traditional style of Chianti Classico.

2. Nose
Condition: Clean
Intensity: Medium
Aroma/Bouquet:
Fruit: Red cherries, fresh strawberries, and hints of plum
Flower: Floral notes of violets and dried herbs

Length: Long, with a finish that maintains the fruit and earthy notes, alongside refreshing acidity

Conclusion

Quality with Respect to Price: The 2020 Monte Bernardi Chianti Classico "Retromarcia" offers excellent value, showcasing the finesse and depth of Chianti Classico at a reasonable price. It is well-crafted, balancing traditional winemaking with modern precision.

Maturity with Respect to Ageing: This wine is approachable now but has the potential to develop further complexity and smoothness with additional aging. It could evolve beautifully over the next 5-10 years.

Food and Wine Pairing: Ideal with Italian cuisine, especially pasta dishes with red sauces, grilled meats, or aged cheeses. The wine's acidity and tannins make it particularly suitable for fatty and savory dishes.

Still fresh and youthful, still stylistically true to Monte Bernardi’s style - lots of cherries, minerality, violet, prosciutto crudo, leather, salty. The tannins subdued but lots of time left in this.

If Bedrock made a Chianti, this would be it. From a single, "heritage" plot planted in 1933. Traditional field blend, native yeasts, unfiltered, yadda yadda. I love that they advertise this as their "anti-Grand Selezione". The purity of the fruit really stands out. The tannins can get quite drying at this early stage, so I would recommend enjoying this with some hearty fare. Fantastic wine.

Nice aromas of rustic red fruit and forest floor. Very pure expression of Sangiovese. Approachable tannin, medium+ body, clean. Long finish of macerated cherry and a touch of tar. Very enjoyable and will pair nicely with food.

Quite a lot of Chianti (Must & Lees, Warren Street): This wine is developing really nicely - all the good stuff I liked a few months ago remains, but it's filled out and become slightly richer on the palate. Very good indeed.

Quite a lot of Chianti (Must & Lees, Warren Street): Notwithstanding my reservations about the stupid branding, the liquid is beyond reproach. Quite complex and deep with layers of dark cherry and floral perfume. Real clarity. Flirting with opulence, it's heady, delicious and really quite accessible.

Textbook Chianti Classico and punches well above its price point (c. £20 DP). Good, not overbearing, level of acidity, grippy but not overly drying tannins and good fruit.

Would recommend 2021 > 2020

Excited to see how this will age.

Very nice Chianti Classico. Some decent depth and a nice balance of fruit forward and interesting spice notes late. Ordered these bottles (2) to satisfy a crowd with diverse preferences. Pleased the Super Tuscan crowd as well as those that wanted something not so bold. Filled the bill nicely for both.

This wine really over-delivers, as it pretty much does each vintage. Super lovely expression of Sangiovese that is good upon release but better with a little more time in bottle. One of the region's best values at $21.99 or so, given the integrity of the farming and winemaking.

Christmas lunch with the wine ark boys (Porcine, Oxford Street): Savoury, slightly meaty, gamey, slightly oxidised notes but I find the alcohol prickle rather dominates the nose, muted red cherry fruit and a touch of herbaceous notes. Medium plus intensity acidity is juicy, red hued fruit again, tight and slightly coarse tannic grip, touch of savouryness, alcohol warmth less prevalent on the palate.

Lavender, bergamot, cherry pit, damson, new leather. Great depth and intensity on the nose- totally compelling. The palate is nice- but it’s not what I’d necessarily expect from the nose, which promises explosive concentration and scale. Instead it’s light to medium bodied with sharp, tart wild berries and raspberry, juicy fresh and lean with powdery tannins. I’d love a wine that tasted like this smells! The automotive-themed label and capsule give me the ick.

NOSE: earthy/red fruits/savory mix; hint of rubbed leather; little bit grapey; pretty expressive (not tight).

BODY: violet-cranberry color of medium-deep depth; medium-light bodied; conglomerate cork.

TASTE: medium+ acidity; cherries for days! -- sweet cherry, cherry Icee; some medium-fine, drying tannins; savory on the finish, and a touch grapey, but mostly cherries; not overtly oaky; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; hint of baked raspberries. Both Ash and I liked this a lot. Although I enjoy Chianti, it seems my Hit rate on them is well below 50% --- this one's a clear winner. Will definitely re-buy. Drink Now and over the medium term.

I liked my prior bottle significantly more than this one, although there is plenty of pure fruit going on. I'm getting some moderately spicy, almost dilly new oak. I'm wondering whether there might have been a new barrel introduced in this vintage. I don't think these guys use barrique, and I wouldn't say this is overoaked, just noticeable to this reactionary palate.

Not much showing on the nose.

However, it has a nice palate with a lighter / traditional flavour profile that exceeds my expectations for an annata. There is nice complexity and potential here. The wine is balanced and to my taste needs further cellaring of at least 2-3 years. There is also a creamy and smooth sensation in the mouth a minute after you swallow - a bit like fine Rioja but without the coconut flavour if that makes sense.

Good to see its alcohol is lowish for this region at 13.5%.

Just what you want for a ready to drink Chianti. Huge nose of raspberry, vanilla, and spring flowers. Palate has plenty of fresh cherry and wild blackberry, with some darker tobacco and clove notes. Tannin is present but not distracting. Overall an elevated example of a young, drinkable chianti.
